If the people of New Zealand want to be part of our world, I believe they should hop off their islands, and push ’em closer. (Lewis Black)

Lewis, you’re a very funny guy, but I don’t think I agree with you on this matter. There are some people from New Zealand who seem to be taking the world by storm without pushing the islands any closer…

I mean, everyone knows about the Boskke* Sky Planter, don’t they? It seems to pop up all over the place. And, it is a great concept. And, it’s designed by a Kiwi.

An inverted pot for flowers, herbs, and other leafy companions, the Sky Planter was designed to save space, conserve water, purify your air, improve your health and transform your view of nature. The boys at Boskke left out ‘provide great design’ in their product spiel.

Because no matter how pure my air becomes or how my view of nature is transformed, I’m not interested in a hanging planter if it is ugly. Call me shallow.

What I did not know is that Boskke founders – Patrick Morris, and his brother, Jake – happen to be the progeny of founders of the world-famous-in-New-Zealand ceramics producer that is Morris & James. Sustainable design is kind of in their blood.

But, now they’ve gone and done it again. The Sky Planter wasn’t enough. Now they’re launching the Boskke Cube…

I think it looks fab’.

Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. (Leonardo da Vinci)

Apparently, the “Boskke Cube reassembles the humble plant pot, putting the organic process of growth on display, rather than hiding it away.

The clear body of the Boskke Cube is also a water reservoir, supplying up to four weeks of moisture through the same Slo-Flo watering system that the best-selling Sky Planters use.”

And again – great design.

Boskke have a number of distributors around the globe. In Sydney, my favourite is Terrace at 47 Queen st, Woollahra, NSW 2025

*The name ‘Boskke’ is derived from the old English word ‘bosky’ which means ‘a small forest’ and that’s exactly what the team from Boskke want us to create with each of their clever eco-sensitive designs.

A good friend won two tickets to the Australian Garden Show Sydney. Small problem. She lives in Auckland. So, she sent me the tickets. Lovely girl…

I was all set to visit the show yesterday. And, to tell you all about how fabulous it is. And, how you should go down to Centennial Park this weekend and check it out. I was planning on having lots of pics to whet your appetite. I imagined having a good old chin wag with the seemingly wonderful Indira Naidoo, she of the Edible Balcony fame. And,  perhaps checking out some workshops in between ogling all the pretty flowers. LM and I even talked about how we would be like spring chickens in amongst all the ‘more mature‘ visitors we imagined such a show would attract.

So. Yesterday Bella, LM and I tootled off to Centennial Park for the show. We got as far as the gate, only to be told, “No dogs allowed”.

So, I’m sorry but there will be no post about the Australian Garden Show Sydney. Not happy, Jan!

NB – for the uninitiated, Bella is a poodle and doesn’t even believe she is a dog!

When one of my plants dies, I die a little inside, too. (Linda Solegato)

Lisa, I feel the same way, only it is a feeling I am quite used to because I am no gardener…

I am, however, a girl who has just had her deck done. As a result, I’m a happy little Vegemite – we can now sit outside and enjoy the balmy, BBQ weather down here. The only problem, is that with the temperate weather come the mozzies (that’s mosquitos to those of you who don’t speak Australian) AND mozzies love me with a passion. So, I have been hunting me down some appropriately attractive citronella candle vessels. Not quite as easy as one might imagine but I think I may finally have a winner.

And, here’s what I came up with – Orla Kiely’s planter in green:

Now, I know what you’re going to say – these beautiful babies are planters not candle receptacles, but work with me. Here’s a wee snap of the Orla Kiely planter with the gorgeous and fragrant (with lavender and citronella) candles in them:

I think they work. Well, too bad if they don’t because they’re now in situ and the parents are visiting from across the ditch, so no time to change…

We bought our Orla Kiely planters from the very stylish Terrace in Woollahra. If you’d like to see more of the very talented Orla Kiely and her world of surface design, you can check out her site here.
