Jo Luping’s Ceramics Make Me Homesick For New Zealand

Like other regions separated from the rest of the world for a long period, New Zealand has developed a distinct flora. About 75% of the native flora is unique, and it includes some of the world’s oldest plant forms. Apart from seals and two species of bats, did you know New Zealand has no indigenous land mammals?

There is a great diversity of birds (and I miss them!), some 250 species in all, including breeding and migratory species. They are not like the cockatoos and kookaburras of Australia.

Among the flightless birds the most interesting is the kiwi, New Zealand’s national symbol and the only known bird with nostrils at the tip of the bill instead of at the base. Other characteristic birds are the kea, a mountain parrot, and the tui, a beautiful songbird.

There’s a real purity in New Zealand that doesn’t exist in the states. It’s actually not an easy thing to find in our world anymore. It’s a unique place because it is so far away from the rest of the world. There is a sense of isolation and also being protected. (Elijah Wood)

Jo Luping Design produces art pieces such as ceramics, jewellery and prints. I particularly like their ceramics which have a real flavour of New Zealand about them. Jo and her design team draw inspiration from New Zealand’s land and sea.

I think they would make lovely gifts. Clever Bastards stocks a large range of Jo Luping Design ceramics if you are interested…

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try! (Dr. Seuss)

Who does this? Who has the imagination and whimsy to come up with the lovely idea of creating images out of discarded pencil savings? Marta Altés – that’s who.

Originally from Barcelona, Marta started her career as a graphic designer before moving to the UK to study children’s book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. She now works as an illustrator, and by the looks of things, it was an inspired decision.

Her work puts a smile on my face…

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities. (Dr. Seuss)

Marta’s website is just as whimsical as her playing with pencil shavings. Go check it out here.

Sharp Suits Poster

Ireland’s creative community got together to release a lot of pent up anger and sadness through the medium of the A3 poster, all in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

Ad creatives, designers, animators, directors, illustrators and more took time out to dress up their favourite worst feedback from clients, transforming quotes that would normally give you a twitch, into a diverse collection of kinda cool posters.

They are worth checking out…

Diem Chau does amazing things with embroidery and porcelain. The result is both understated and quite beautiful.

Vietnam-born Chau is now a Seattle-based artist. She uses ordinary found objects as the base for her embroidery. According to Chau, her work creates “delicate vignettes of fleeting memory, gesture and form, resulting in works that combine egalitarian sensibility and minimalist restraint.”

Her work is often about memories, real or imagined, which she uses to tell her story. She often works from photos of distant family members she’s never met, which appear as faint embroidered figures floating on white porcelain dishes. But it’s in the unexpected details of her work that she uses to draw the viewer into her narrative. A red thread emerging from the subjects relates back to the process of storytelling.

Totally intrigued by how she achieves her porcelain embroidery, I was so pleased to discover that Chau herself has written a couple of posts on her process in her blog, The Pleasure of Tiny Things.

My favourite!

I know, I know… Not all of you are scarfaholics like me. Never the less, I just had to share these wee finds with you. The so-kitsch-they’re-cool Silken Favours hand drawn illustrative prints turn the cutesy into the oh-so-cool with their gorgeous range of scarves.

Discovered at the Liberty best of British open call in 2011, Victoria Murdoch is the creative talent and creator behind Silken Favours. Finding her inspiration in the natural world, Vicki uses traditional, intricate and very time-consuming pen and ink techniques, evoking imagery that is both otherworldly yet also strangely familiar. She takes a playful and warm-hearted approach to her subjects.

Have a look and see what you think…

But wait! – There’s more…

In the event you are not a scarfaholic, you can pick up one of Silken Favours gorgeous  illustrative numbers in a silk cushion. One such as this, no less:

AND, if that wasn’t enough, I have still more!

Nope! It’s not a set of steak knives. It’s this wonderful discovery I made a while back where the gorgeous Liberty’s scarf alchemist, Lauranne Plat teaches you, me, and everybody, how to tie scarves like only the French, the Liberty style queens, and Hermes employees know how. Click through here to check out the You Tube vid’ if you don’t believe me… She’s gorgeous AND practical.

And, one last thing… While the Silken Favours collection is available exclusively through Liberty, Vicki Murdoch offers a bespoke service where she will design a personalised scarf for you or a loved one for £475.00. Bargain! You can see more here.

Oh – the Liberty sales started this week (online included!)!

Into The Sunset With Pooh and Piglet by E.H. Shepard

Into The Sunset With Pooh and Piglet by E.H. Shepard

Back in April, when I wrote my Oscar speech, I mentioned that I had held off responding to a couple of blogging award nominations because I found it much, much easier to write or post about almost anything other than myself. Well, it appears it hasn’t got any easier with time and I am well overdue again. How rude of me!

“Oh Tigger, where are your manners?”

“I don’t know, but I bet they’re having more fun than I am.” – A.A. Milne

So, as with Tigger and his guilty conscience, I apologise for my tardy response, and I now give you a wee post to say thank you to a few of the lovely people out in blog-land who have nominated This Sydney Life for a few more blog awards.

First, there is Life in Relation to Art with the One Lovely Blog Award. Next, Simple Cherishes with a double banger – the One Lovely Blog Award and The Very Inspiring Blogger Award. Finally, my Polish blogging bud’, Layyla Over the Rooftops of the World with The Versatile Blogger Award. To you all, I say a very heart-felt ‘Thank you!’…

Type Written Thank You

(Image sourced from here)

Sometimes,’ said Pooh, ‘the smallest things take up the most room in your heart. – A.A. Milne

I don’t think I’m a terribly naïve person. Truly. And, I’m not a girl who follows her horoscopes, either. But, it has been mentioned, on more than one occasion that I may be a typical Libra. This is possibly a good thing given my birthday is in October! I did a quick google search and it turns out that, with one or two exceptions, that could be correct, too*… A Libra loves art, is a slight perfectionist, is charitable, can be bossy at times (LM nods head), enjoys a debate, dislikes ugliness (who doesn’t?), and apparently can’t take criticism.

Anyhoo, all of this is a long-winded introduction to me attempting to inarticulately express how much I’m getting out of this blogging gig, which in turn seems to tick a lot of those ‘Libra boxes’** So much more, in fact, than I ever could have imagined. And, that is almost entirely due to the connections blogging has provided me from around the globe. This includes the comments I receive about my wee shares and finds – mostly, but not always, from fellow bloggers who have stumbled across This Sydney Life; and also, the bloggers I meet through reading their blogs – some often, and others more intermittently.

I knew when I met you an adventure was going to happen. – A.A. Milne

Without exception, my experience in ‘starter blog-land’ has been a welcoming, friendly and supportive adventure. It has surpassed all expectations. My wee band of subscribers is growing, so I must be doing something right. Best of all, I have a legitimate outlet for all those little design-oriented finds I want to share. How lucky am I?

If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear. – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

One of the great things about the blog world is that you can find a blog about just about any subject you can imagine. And, because blogs, by their very nature, are not like committing to a novel, you can dip your toe in the water to see if you like the temperature before subscribing. And, they’re free. Yeah, Baby!

So, just for a bit of a gas, I thought I’d randomly choose some topics that interest me right now on this Sunday afternoon and google them to see if I could find blogs on these subjects. Here’s what I found:

New Zealand Design: Fancy – a yummy looking blog featuring awesome design stuff from New Zealand & around the world. But mainly NZ. I am now a fan.

Australian Design: ModaMuse – modern Australian and New Zealand designers, artisans and crafters. Oh, yes please

Shoes: All That Shoes – I’m a girl so it follows that i like shoes. Check out this tumblr site for some oh-so-sexy shoes… Don’t even get me started on the last pair I purchased – orange patent Kenzo heels, no less!

Slow Food: Red-Tail Blog – Slow food in Australia that is good, clean and fair. I wish I’d found this one much earlier. GREAT blog!

Poodles: The Poodle & Dog Blog – a blog to celebrate the remarkable, the ordinary, and the very funny dogs that share our world. Enough said.

Sydney Eats: Grab Your Fork – Sydney eats, tasty travels and a feast of photos. Helen has been writing this award-winning blog for a while now. There’s a reason it is so popular…

I love the inter-web!

I think I’ll sign off now. I’ve rabbited on for long enough. But thanks again, to all of you, who pop in to This Sydney Life. I appreciate it. Every time.

TTFN. Ta Ta For Now! – A.A. Milne

* If you happen to be an expert on horoscopes, I haven’t done an in-depth study on my Ascendant sign or Moon sign. I readily acknowledge I am no professional in these matters.

** ‘Libra boxes’ – perhaps not the most appropriate term I could have chosen, hmmm?

Have a look at these amazing bird life creations by Diana Beltran Herrera. They are made out of coloured paper!

Born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1987 (which makes her just 24 years old!), Diana Beltran Herrera has a degree in Industrial Design, but she clearly is one of those talented people who is just as likely to make it as an artist as a designer.

Can you imagine how much patience she must have…?

If you live in Sydney and have yet to see the ArtExpress 2012 exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, you have just one week before it’s too late. It is well worth a special trip to the Art Gallery just to see this wonderful exhibition. Trust me on this.

ArtExpress is the annual exhibition of outstanding student artworks developed for the art making component of the Higher School Certificate examination in Visual Arts for 2011. So, for the uninitiated – the artists who make up this exhibition are school students of around 17 years of age, give or take a year.

Every year I am blown away by the artistic talent we have bubbling away within our secondary schools. Have a taster…

The Sydney Morning Herald published a wonderful article about the very talented Benja Harney this morning. Benja is a Sydney-based paper artist. Although he originally trained in graphic design, he now creates amazing works out of paper. The magic he creates with little more than a scalpel and some paper is just fantastic!

The accordion was part of a solo exhibition at Object Gallery

By her own admission, Lyndie Dourthe’s Parisian workshop is a tiny curio cabinet of a little botany, a little voodoo, a little anatomy and a touch of superstition.

She combines paper and fabric to form exquisite and mysterious naturalistic wonders…
