This post is especially for to the lovely Layyla all the way over in Poland, from Layyla over the rooftops of the world, in honour of her “Hopscotch” post. Wish you were here to see it in person, Layyla!
Sydney has once again been transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas as Vivid Sydney kicked off last night. This year, the festival runs until 11 June, and if you’re in town it is well worth a visit.
Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the new Vivid Ideas Exchange at the MCA featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
Vivid Sydney is a major celebration of the creative industries and the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 400,000 attendees in 2011. I think many of them were out again last night, checking out all the goings on for 2012, in and around Circular Quay. It was just buzzing with activity – filled with people young and old, not to mention lots of tripods as photographers vied to take the best shot.
LM and I braved the hordes to bring you some of these images…
Now heading into its fourth year, Vivid Sydney was ranked in the Top Ten global ideas festivals by the influential Guardian newspaper in the UK.
I’ll leave you with a wee taste of what I’m sure would have been a pretty fab’ performance inside the House last night. Florence + The Machine performing ‘Never Let Me Go’
If you would like to learn more about Vivid Sydney, check out the website here.

The light installations are just magic, 2BD. The only downer was there were too many two legged animals for our four legged friends to have been comfortable, I think. 🙂

They showed more on the news this morning and it really looks fantastic, you did well to get so many photos with all those people around. It would have been way too exciting and busy for our dear doggies, such a shame 🙂

Almost passed this post by as I’m behind with my reading (what’s new?) IF I ever make it to Sydney it’s got to be while this show is running. We have a much smaller scale light installation show in Durham which I love. http://restlessjo.wordpress.com/2011/11/20/celebrating-light-with-durham/

And, then there’s my personal favourite, Sculpture By The Sea in October, Jo. Perhaps, if you’re coming all this way, you should plan on staying for a while. You need to make a comprehensive comparison to Durham! 🙂

Marina – just back from seeing the luscious Bob Downe perform. You can’t get much more Sydney than that, I reckon’. He was hilarious.
Will you be back in October for the Sculpture By The Sea? Its my favourite. 🙂

Such a great festival – love the effort they put in all around the city, so much cleverness on display! The Opera House climbers look brillant, but even the way that they’ve changed the street lights lining Circular Quay to different colours is enough to impress me! Can’t wait to check it all out… 🙂

Hey Sparks – as a ring-in (rather than a born ‘n’ bred Sydney Chick), I reckon’ I can tout the way Sydney puts on a festival. The city does it so well – whether its New Years Eve, Mardi Gras, Vivid or SBTS. I was blown away by the light installations. 🙂
Hope you’re having a fab’ weekend.

LM does love that hat, S!
It was a super evening. Sydney is great at events like this that are open for all the public. It was wonderful to see families enjoying the central city. 🙂

Now I’ve managed to read back all the posts I’ve missed first I want to thank you for the dedication, it’s so nice of you, really, it’s hard to explain waht a feeling you get at the other side of the world knowing that another person is possibly thinking about you while watching those impressive and amazing light constructions and projections.
The photos you have attached just prove my point – the Festival is just fabulous! I particularly like the Opera House with that dance projection, no idea how the architects back in the days it was constructed knew about video projections on buildings, but they sure made a great job with this sails-screens 😉 Looks amazing..
